When is glazing compound ready to be painted?

So, the jar of glazing compound reads:

Glazing must be painted after it has skinned over and attained a firm set (7 - 14 days depending on temperature and humidity).

Sounds clear enough. However, what does "firm set" mean exactly? It has been 8 days of ideal temperatures and humidity. If I stick my fingernail into the compound, it makes a dent. Should I be waiting for the compound to harden before I paint over it?
