Trundle Bed Repair

Hi....we recently bought a used Bed under Bed trundle. Unfortunately, when my husband went to reassemble it, he discovered that the area in the head and foot boards where you put in the screws is stripped and very weak. The bed literally "slipped" out of the wooden posts. Can any of you experts out there please advise us as to the best way to repair this? We of course thought of wood putty, but considering this bed is for kids, and for safety reasons we are worried that it might need more enforcement than just that. Please help!! Thanks so much :)
