Driveway Concrete Pour

Getting bids on finishing off the concrete driveway here. The last owner only had the front half by the garage done. Now I want to finish it off to the street.

South Dakota. About 1,300 square feet with a thickened edge on the right side because of culvert area. 4 inch thick. Fiber reinforced. No major slope to deal with. Easy access.

The last guy out has been doing it 17 years. But it is only him and one other guy. Said he would use gravel base compacted to 2 inches. Seemed thin to me, but he said he never has any issues with it.

Because of the size of the pour, he said he would do it in 3 long sections to the street and then cross cut it.

Bit concerned about that with the freezing weather here. Would not want one section heaving out of line with the the other next to it.

First contractor out has a larger crew, about 8 guys and can get it done with one pour apparently. His bid came in at $6,165.

Looking for opinions on this from those with concrete driveway experience....

A two man crew sounds small for that size pour.
It'd be good if you could look at some jobs that both contractors had done a few years ago to see how they're holding up.

I'm leaning toward the guy with the 17 years experience.

What is the price for the 2 man team?
What did the contractor with the larger crew say he would do for the base?

1300 square feet of driveway is an easy job for two experienced people. Once the site is properly prepared (in advance), placing and finishing the concrete is easy for that area.

The first guy has been doing it a long time as well. Too old to do the actual work anymore. He has done a number of driveways in the area here. They look good. Nice work. One is just about 4 homes down from me, entire drive and walk heading to house. Not sure how much base he uses.

Have not received the bid from the the second guy yet. Not sure why he couldn't just write it up in the truck then and there. He did say it was probably not going to be done this year if I went with him. All the concrete guys are busy this time of year it seems. So I may be having to wait until spring. He said it would take them a week to get it done weather permitting once they start.

Two other concrete flat work guys I called didn't even bother calling me back. I understand if they are too busy to add another project. But at least pick up the phone and let me know that.
