Best way to clean a stone fireplace?

I am working on a stone fireplace that is about 30 years old. It has never been cleaned. I can tell that the flat stones have some pink and gold streaks running thru them. It is very pretty rock. However, the dirt and soot (wood burning) covers up 75% of the pretty rock especially right around the firebox opening. I was going to use TSP to wash it down and rinse with water. then, apply a stone enhancer/sealer - like the product that is used for stone tiles.
Is there a better way to do this?

Just do not use a steel wire brush.

Steel metal will smear on the stone and then slowly cause rust to appear.

Brass or plastic brushes.

The more often you clean up, the less dusty it will be......

I saw on HGTV that you can use oven cleaner and a scrub brush and it will do the trick. Make sure to take all safety precautions glasses, mask, and cover your skin. I do not know if this works just passing along the tip!

Good luck,
Red
