1/2 HP Craftsman Garage Door - Erratic Behavior

I have an older (circa 1991) 1/2 HP Craftsman garage door opener. It began to behave erratically, randomly opening and closing, about a month ago. A few weeks ago it stopped working all together. Neither the direct wired button or remotes will trigger operation. I know it's getting power because if I unplug and the plug it back in the light comes on.

Is it worth taking the opener apart to try and diagnose the problem and if so does anybody have a recommended place to begin looking? Or should I just assume 20 years is more than the life expectancy of a Craftsman garage door opener.

20 years is way beyond the normal life expectancy of any garage door opener. Your problem is most likely caused by a bad logic board and if it is still available would cost much too much. Your best bet is a new model with up to date features.
