Lawn mower gear case lubbricant

I have a Craftsman self-propelled walk behind mower where the front wheel drive stopped working. It has a 7 HP Briggs engine. The problem, as I found out, was the plastic drive gear in the gear case was stripped out.. The gear case has s belt going to a pulley on top. The pulley is attached to a pinion gear that drives the plastic gear, which is mounted, directly on the drive shaft.

The question I have is what kind of lubricant should be used when the new gear is installed and assembled .Should I use Bentonite grease, and how much should I put, or should I use gear oil
