I have some cracks in the cedar siding after replacing some windows. The siding is 40 years old and in otherwise good condition. Can I caulk the cracks(none are wide)before staining the wood or must I replace the cedar siding or use vinyl siding over the cedar, which is much more expensive, to protect the wood long term?

Cost wise caulking with a paintable, good elastomeric is the least expensive of the choices. Not bad with small cracks. Just keep your eyes on them if they are in a lot of sun, especially if the cedar has a dark finish.

Thanks, I appreciate your reply. One of the painters in his bid wants to replace the cracked cedar siding with new cedar siding . I have read that that might be a problem due to difficulty in fitting new siding into old siding. Do you have any thoughts on This question Harpo
