Reusing cabinets in our kitchen update.

We are going forward on a kitchen facelift, ie. granite counters, tile backsplash, new floor. However our maple cabinets w/ cherry stain are staying. The 18 years they have been in use have taken their toll. They are in need of degriming and touch-up on the satin poly. The pic shows the spot where the poly is worn off above handle. My questions are how do I clean them and can I just put poly in worn spot or must I sand down entire face and repoly?

They look like lovely cabinets. Try the paint forum. SOTP, I'd say clean them, steel wool and then new coating.

I would NOT paint. I might pay an expert to refinish them.

I'm with Al - the cabinets look in good shape. It's pretty easy to remove the doors and drawers (number them) and send them out for refinishing.

I would try cleaning them and using some rub on polyurethane (general finishes) on a little seen cabinet door. That may be enough to get you by for another ten years.
