repair columns in front of house

One of the columns in front of my house has insect damage on the bottom (approx. six inches). Instead of replacing the entire column I would like to cut out the damaged section and repair/replace the lower part. It is a square column, 84" high and constructed of four 1x6.

I once saw this done on This Old House but I don't recall the method.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

One way would be to remove the column, and replace it with a temporary support. With the column horizontal, you should be able to use a hacksaw to cut out the damaged wood. There will likely be nails present, so a hacksaw blade is needed for this task. The replacement wood can be glued in with epoxy, sanded smooth, and painted to match. Fitting in the replacement wood can be tedious & time consuming, but the results will be worth the effort.

It's probably damaged from water, so use pressure treated wood to repair and especially seal the end grain of each board.
