Shining marble artificially

I bought a small 16-inch diameter marble top table at Goodwill. I was able to take out the scratches with 0000 steel wool, but it also removed what was left of the shine. I've tried compounding polish without luck. Can I coat the marble with some sort of gloss? It also has some white circles which I couldn't buff out. I'm thinking a high gloss might minimize the appearance of the circles and the scratches I couldn't remove.

Get yourself an inexpensive random orbital sander from a big box store with an assortment of grits. Sand from 120, 220, 330, 400, and when you hit it with a red Scotchbrite pad under the sander it will start to shine with no scratches. If you want more gloss, follow the red with a gray.
