Fireplace mortar

The brick inside the fireplace appears to have been smoothed over with mortar & is now crumbling off. It has been converted to a gas log. Do I need anything special to repair this & skim it over with new mortar? Will just regular mortar mix be ok?

Fireplace mortar is not the same as plain mortar.

You want refractory mortar.
