Garage door won't raise

Hi,

This morning, my garage door opener wouldn't raise the door. The motor runs, but the gear on top doesn't turn. From what I could see, it wasn't even attempting to move the chain. The chain is pretty loose, so I'm planning on re-seating it on the gear, and then tightening it back up.

The unit is a lift-master 1/2 HP opener. I searched the web for similar issues, but nothing sounded quite the same. Are there any common troubleshooting tasks I can do before I look at doing a repair/replacement?

Did you try unlatching the opener from the door and raising it manually yourself? If you can't, the spring is probably broken.

Sounds like the connection between the motor shaft and the drive gear has failed or the shaft broke.

If there is a mechanical connection(Woodruff key) you might be able to replace it. If the gear is splined onto the shaft---you may have to just replace the entire motor.
