exposed steel beam: do I need to "finish" it?

We just had a 25-foot steel beam installed as part of removing a load-bearing wall. The architect has suggested we paint it, but I'm rather fond of the industrial character of the raw & slightly rusty steel.

Is there an option that would preserve the raw look? Is there a down-side to just leaving it as is? I live in a dry climate, and like to think that will help it not rust too much. I would love any thoughts or advice you have for me.

Spray it with lacquer.

Or automotive clear-coat, which is a heaver bodied lacquer..

We have a 44' span with uprights, and yes, our painter used an automotive clear lacquer. Done almost 12 years ago, looks great. I love the look.

It was a two-part (epoxy?) type stuff, and the painter got it at an auto body supply place. The painter passed away a few years ago or I'd call him and ask. ;-(

Thanks everyone - this makes sense, and I like it. Plus my husband LOVES to apply auto body paint, he would paint the entire house in it, I think, if I let him. Thanks!
