I disconnected the wall unit and, so far, I haven't had a "ghost" opening. I also tried the cancel sequence and it did NOT work. Does this have any significance?

What kind of remote? The old dip switch type ones have a limited number of combinations and is someone nearby chooses the same settings the door can open. It can also be caused by sensors being not adjusted correctly.

The most common cause of this is the wall control but it can also be staples that have cut through the insulation.
