Sounds like a relatively small job. I'd have the sellers repair it as a condition of sale. Otherwise, you might have problems getting insurance, or a mortgage, on a building that is structurally compromised.

Out here, anything involving structural needs to be addressed by a licensed contractor and can involve a structural engineer. In any event, your best bet is to get real world estimates from a contractor in your area, either a masontry or reputable builder. Get more than one estimate and opinion of the project seeking out only those that are experienced and have a good reputation. Indicating that 2x4's need to be put in to provide support might or might not be the "fix". You need to get another opinion depending on the severity of the project.

There is not going to be a mortgage so not concerned about that. Note this is a detached garage and not the residence itself.

The column is supporting the garage. This is a 2 car detached garage. It is the column between the 2 bays of the garage. The brick is on the outside, I'm sure the column itself is wood behind the brick.

We just have limited time here so was trying to get a feel for whether anyone had seen anything like this.

It sounds like a brick veneer structure. If that's the case, the bricks won't be supporting too much if there's a lentel above it. The brick ties that held the unit upright have probably failed. What does the wood behind the brick look like from the garage interior? If it's solid, the job should be a few hours work for a mason. Get local estimates and be sure of the cost.
