concealed shelf supports

We are installing very heavy wood shelves in our kitchen to create an open shelving look. We purchased Butternut wood because of it's old, industrial look. The shelves will be 34" long, 2" thick, and 12" deep. We'd like to conceal all the brackets or supports so they appear to be floating. Here's my questionwhat do we use to hang them that will support a great deal of weight. The wood is heavy by itself, but I want to store dishes and glasses on them too.

Would a french cleat system work? Or what would any of you recommend? Thanks for any advice!
