Help! Can't match 2 yr old GAF Roofing

Posted by susan631 (My Page) on

In the spring of 2006 I had a GAF roof installed on my house. The shingles are Timberline 30 Cedar Blend Color. In the new year, I plan to add a 12 x 22 second floor extention onto the back of the home. My problem is that GAF went through a merger with a company called ELK and has discontinued the shingles I need. When I called GAF I was told these shingles have been discontinued for a year now and the closest available match will be darker. This rep I spoke to was unable to point me toward any sources of possible old stock where I could buy what I need. I'm not about to have the entire roof re-done, but the prospect of having a mismatched roof does not make me happy either. I was wondering if anyone out there has any clue about where I could purchase some old stock of this GAF roofing. I hope it's out there somewhere! Thanks for any help or advice. Susan

I wouldn't take the gaf's reps word for it., investigate on your own by calling local and outlying areas suppliers as well as roofing contractors. Sometimes roofers have projects fall through and they keep the stock. Luck of the draw maybe, but you never know. It just takes getting on the phone and researching.

Take GAF's word for it.

GAF shingles were some of the crappiest that ever hit the market (which is why the company failed and is now owned by ELK)

And once shingle runs or lines from ANY company are discontinued, they simply ARE no longer available.

One option would be to re-roof one side of the roof with one shingle while leaving the other side original if this is possible.

It would then be of any concern if there was a color difference because one cannot look at both sides of a roof at the same time.

if they're set up to make that color it doesn't matter who owns them, they're going to keep making it. don't take the rep's word, go to the outlet or distributor or wherever you got the stuff and take a sample with you, I'd bet they have something identical or if not indiscernibly close.

Might also try another mfg. such as Owens Corning-
Most of the major mfrs have the exact same colors-just give them different names for legal purposes.

Be careful, if they have not been making these for over a year, that means that the ones you buy have been stacked somewhere for that period of time and might be difficult to separate.
Also just because no one makes a shingle with a particular name for the color does not mean someone isn't making the same color and using another name. Take a sample and check out all the places you can find that sell shingles.
It is not likely that you are going to find a perfect match anyhow because of fading and weathering.
Buy some that are just a bit darker and pretty soon they will match pretty close.

Or you could use a different kind of roofing on the addition. Metal roofing mixes well with almost anything.
