Basement finishing

Greetings!

My basement needs finishing. Although being a DIYer at heart, this one I will leave up to the pros. The goal is to get a home theater, a laundry room, a storage room, a small bathroom, and a general leisure area done. Currently, the basement is at its bare bones. There are about 1200 sqft to finish, which will include updating the electrical panel. I was also considering an interior designer for the project. While I have a general idea of what I want, I think some professional input would broaden my horizon further, and would get me more, and hopefully even better ideas.

Okay, now that I stated my plans, what is the best way to tackle this? Do I need an architect, or does it all go via a general contractor? Are there interior designers working with contractors to integrate their design ideas? How long will it take to get the project done (I am planning to take a hiatus from work)?

I would greatly appreciate your input!! Thanks a bunch in advance!!!

RE: Basement finishing

You may want to also post this in the basement forum.

I hired a general contractor for my basement. He did the framing and trim part himself, and sub'd out the electrical, plumbing, dry wall and painting. It took about 3 months to complete.

Not all contractors can help you with design ideas. Maybe pursue a contractor that specializes/experience in home theatres. The other rooms are pretty basic.

Good luck with your project.

Congrats !

I guess in your case a GC that works closely w/designer should suffice. I tend to think of architects for new construction, additions, changes to footprints -

As my architect friend always says - "basements are for utility and storage, not finished space" that said I think majority of Americans have at least some finished basement space.

I would make sure mechanicals/utilities are well located and easily accessible - I took pics and noted locations of things like water line to refrig - shut off valves and the likes - additionally several access panels

- Is the basement below grade? any water, humidity, cracks, condensation issues - should be clearly addressed and remedied before construction

FYI - RE: home theater in basement - Sound should be thought of 1st - basements contain utilities, laundry, water lines above as well as foot traffic/sound from above. A home theater without proper sound proofing will be for naught - I have roxul (mineral wool typically used for firestopping) btwn joists, MLV (mass loaded vinyl) and acoustical tiling in my basment ceiling - and a well fitted exterior door that goes from the finished side to utility side

I found a plethora of excellent information and people at the link below - If not for them my set up and system would have definately been done incorrectly

Good luck

RE: Basement finishing

Firstly, I'd start keeping a scrapbook/binder on what you want. I'd personally draw out my sq ft'ge on graph paper and make some copies. Now decide what you want in your basement ex) guest room(s), bathroom w/wo tub?, bar area, home theatre, computer area, laundry, storage, games area etc. Then plan where you want "what", it doesn't need to be exact! Play with it and see what makes the most sense, if it helps use tape on the floor to see if you think a certain area will be big enough.
I like to google images to get ideas, you can print them off to keep in your binder/scrapbook too.
Talk to ppl about what they like or don't like and keep a log for future. By having all these ideas together it would help out the Designer or GC which ever you choose.
I haven't used a GC until now (water break in the kitchen, GC is just re-doing and putting back the way it was) or a designer but friends have all used GC's to put their (owners) ideas/plans in their homes. Most tell me the GC always has ideas or hints to help out. They kinda work together but the GC does the work : )
I wouldn't rush in to it by any means. Take your time and think of what you want, not what a designer or GC wants, and what will work for your family. Of course I'd get all electrical/plumbing feedback from a professional but if they have an idea of what you want "where" that would help them and possible save $$.
If you post a blank slate/graph paper pic with stairs & walls that can't be moved in place, I'm sure you'll get a lot of ideas and feed back : ) Another idea is to post on the 'building a home' site.
Good luck, can't wait to see what you decide.

RE: Basement finishing

Thanks to those who posted feedback to my query!! It has been a while since I had a chance to log on.

Had I known there was a basement forum, I would have posted there.

Meanwhile, I have found a contractor with whom I would like to work. I am really excited about the project, even though, this time, I am just involved in the planning.
