How do I finish this drywall edge?

My boyfriend and I are replacing trim and adding wainscoting in the dining room of our new home. There is a built-in bookcase at one end of the room very close to the window.

We removed a tall piece of trim that was on the end of the bookshelf in order to measure and deal with a ridge of built up paint. The piece of trim was covering a drywall edge and in removing it most of the drywall paper was ripped off and some chunks of gypsum fell out too.

I'm thinking it would be a bad idea to just tack that trim back up when we're done w/ all the moulding but I'm not sure how to address it. I pushed little scraps of window screen in some of the bigger gaps and then smushed some plaster of Paris in. I stopped but seemed like the logical thing to do at the time.

Here are two pics - a 'before' picture so you can get some perspective and the other a close up of the area. This area isn't missing any of the big chunks though, just the drywall paper.
