Baseboard molding in finished basement

I am trying to install baseboard molding in my finished basement. The problem is the basement was finished by the previous owners, and I can only guess what kind of a setup it is. It looks to me like it's 3/4" thick and 9" wide tongue and groove wood panels installed on top of some plastic feeling board. (It's definitely not drywall. Perhaps Hardie board?). My plan was to use an adhesive (Liquid nails, etc) to glue the molding to the wood panels and also nail the molding to the panels. I talked to a guy at the Home Depot and he said it's a bad idea, as adhesive may fail in moist conditions of the basement, and the wood panels may not be thick enough for the molding to stay put. I am not able to find the studs, so not sure how to proceed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks very much.

Alex
