Refacing melamine cabinets with Formica?

| Hello,
We would like to change the look of our kitchen melamine (wood grain) cabinets but we don't want to go through the pain of a complete kitchen makeover (and of course the price is different...)
We like the look of bamboo (especially with the stainless steel counter top that's coming soon). We found that Formica makes laminate that looks like bamboo a lot. It's called Bamboo Cane from Formica Woodgrains line.

Is it possible to cover our melamine cabinets (doors, sides etc) with this laminate? We don't want to do it ourselves and are willing to hire someone to do it but we can't seem to find anyone here who looks like they know what we are talking about!
Thanks for your help. |

| It is a real PITA to get anything to stick to melamine. If the cabinets are slab doors (just a flap panel) it might be worthwhile to see if you can have new doors made to fit. |

Hi, Yes it's a slab door type. Maybe they could make new doors but then you still have the sides and the back of the cabinets to cover up. Is that technically feasible to make new doors out of Formica and then cut the Formica to the appropriate size and glue or nail it on the existing sides and backs? |

| I don't want to sound snobbish, but I hate it when Formica tries to mimic natural materials like wood/bamboo. Don't get me wrong, I've installed Formica in my own house, but I stick with plain or neutral. I also think that doing all of your cabinet fronts in fake bamboo could look overwhelming and cheesy. You can get 3/4" thick bamboo plywood (ply-boo) that could be made into great-looking new cabinet fronts. See if that is within your budget. I think you would be much happier with the result. |

| Ply-boo is not cheap. I priced it at $200+ for a 4 x 8 sheet. That's not including getting it shipped from where ever they are located. (West coast, I believe.) |
