Jazzing up exterior

Posted by stewiepopcorn (My Page) on

Hello!

My husband and I have recently added new windows, siding, and Novabrik to our home. Unfortunately, the exterior still looks a bit blah. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can jazz up the exterior of our home? I know it's kind of a boring ranch, but there must be something we can do.

Thanks

Great landscaping could make ALL the difference.

It is what it is. The biggest detraction is the odd proportion and placement of the windows.

I agree with sweeby: put some colorful and varied height plants in some foundation beds. If you've got money to do something more than landscaping, you could add a small cover with a gable over the entry steps/landing with a couple columns at the top of the stairs.

Maybe paint the front door a similar color to the red brick, to bring that color into the top half of the house. If you will be re-doing your shingles go with a reddish color to go with the brick. And some plantings will help.

I would add shutters, paint the door and add some landscaping. I did a mockup to give you an idea. I've never posted a picture before so I'm not sure this will work.

Ok this should work. I'm no expert but it gives you an idea

Nice job, Goldie50, looks fabulous, especially the contrasting color scheme.

The only thing I can add, and it may cost a bit, is to add some landscape features using a brick to match the Novabrick. Maybe a short wall for the protruding garden, or one of those yard lamps with a brick base. It always adds to the overall effect of a place if there are features that tie to each other in material or design.

Pic Goldie did looks great, the shutters really take the eye away from the assorted windows & warm it up. Can you make a brick pillar for the mailbox & another with light on it as tryinbrian suggested, the front steps might look more inviting if you could put brick on the sides & make the step larger & brick perhaps with brick along the walk to driveway on each side of it placed the long way, just widens it some & ties everything together. My walkway was put in my builder & DH added a single brick next to each side & so makes it about 7-8 in. wider. Now 2 people can walk up to house side by side. I actually had people step off onto grass before & that was kind of embarrassing. Helps if DH is handy! Enjoy your new home!!
