If you're asking about how to put tile over brick, here's a link: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/asktoh/question/0,,20065453,00.html.

I put tile over the brick around my fireplace and it worked well, pretty much following the instructions in the link above. I think there's a product to apply to the brick first to increase the adhearance of the thinset but I'm not sure - maybe someone will post or you can ask around.

One thing to keep in mind, as with all tile jobs: Measure well and test your tile layout on the floor first. If you're building a new mantle, as I did, you can design it along with your tile layout so they work together enabling you to eliminate the need to cut any tile. If you're not rebuilding the mantle, you might select a tile size that minimizes the need for cuts.

As far as a floor to ceiling tile job, I'd be very careful to get the design right. That's a very large, monlithic area so design will be important. Look for examples if you're not creative.

RE: surround fire place (help) - adding info

Here's a photo of my fireplace, with the painting unfinished. I should add that put 1 row of tile inside the box on both sides, and the tiles on the front surface that surround the box are bullnosed. I added cove trim where the mantle legs and tile meet, though an alternative would be to build the legs so they overlap the tile a bit. I trimmed the floor around the tile with 1/4" oak to match the oak floor. The original brick was flush with the floor and the tile added 1/4", thus the need for this trim.
