not sure how to explain...'smoothing over' an old door jamb

I have a door jamb in my hallway, with no door in it. I want to remove the trim and door stop and just smooth it over and paint it to look like an entryway with no door jamb. How difficult is this and how would I do it?

Completely remove the wood jamb. Install sheetrock on the edges, use corner bead on all corners. Mud the corner bead and let dry. Sand the excess and mud again and let dry. Might need a third coat of mud.

After final sanding, primer with drywall primer and paint.

Or remove jamb and make a new, smooth jamb with wood and trim, if you want it to look like a doorless doorway, if you know what I mean. I'd bang into the edges, so that's the way I'd go. :-)

Think about how you will tackle the baseboard; it is usually brought through drywalled openings; lots of outside miters to get just right. Can you get matching material and are you capable of tying it in neatly with the adjoining work? Will removal of the trim leave marks on the floor? Painted or unfinished areas? There are lots of worms in the can you are about to open up. If you are a real stickler for detail you could have your hands full.

I agree with reyesuela. Just remove the jamb. Fill in with wood putty and get it perfectly smooth, then paint. This will look OK if your house is not ultra modern. I have a large opening between my LR and DR, and it is framed with wood. So when we took out the door from the kitchen to the basement, we finished off the doorway and it looks "normal."
