Can I do replacement windows myself?

So I've googled everything I can find on how to install replacement windows. It just doesn't seem that complicated. I'm just concerned about things that I don't know that I wouldn't know to expect. Any tips, thoughts, advice?

| It's hard to tell your skill level on-line! The biggest unknowns are: 1) all the short-cuts and mistakes you may uncover of the original installation and 2) how far you need to go in correcting them.

I had the front of the house done a few years ago. I watched what they were doing. To my knowledge, no surprises came up other than some of the opening are not plumb. I've got shims on hand. I'm mostly worried about measuring correctly. I'll already be giving up visible light by using replacement windows, so I'm trying to make them as large as possible and still fit.

It's pretty much a function of your skill level, which is impossible for us to gauge although with all due respect I hope you know more about it than what you learned watching the guys a couple of years ago. I might suggest having a backup plan. Assume the worst and things go horribly wrong; who can you call to help?

Got a handyman on standby. I figure I'll try one of the small bathroom windows first. It I suceed, I'll order the bigger ones. Otherwise, plan B.

Replaced all the windows myself 30 yrs ago. All double hung, double pane, clad on the outside. These were all tilt in wood windows. They were bought at Carter Lumber. At that time they had an order form that detailed how to measure the windows. Installation was easy. From the inside remove the stop and the bottom window. Then remove the parting bead and the top window. Fasten a track to each side that that has sponge foam on the back to seal and snap the windows in the track. Replace the window molding and you are done. Did 14 windows in two weekends.
