Adding an overhang to a doorway

Am building a townhome close to the beach. It is on pilings. The doorway has no overhang. My builder recommends me putting an awning over it to protect against the wind and rain of coastal storms. I don't like an awning over a front entry door. Am considering adding a cantileverd shed roof overhang (the door is part of a 9 foot wide glass panel so it would have to be 10 ft long.) The exterior is finished, the siding is up. I want frame the overhang and cover it with the same metal that is on the roof. Can this be done without much headache or siding removal? I assume I would have to bolt it in to the structure. Also, am considering using PVC instead of wood, would that be a good idea?

Best way is to cut out the siding to attach anchor boards--to which all the framing for the overhang is attached---it should a long horizontal board(2" by 6") with vertical pieces on each end. Use flashing under the siding and over the roof sheathing for water control. The biggest headache will be how to seal the new roofing to the siding along the top. PVC lumber is not rated for structural use and would be good for use where possible(joists), but if there is a way to wrap the framing lumber with PVC, that would be a good idea.

Thanks for your help, if I could bug you some more, what would you do in my situation? My townhomes are built on pilings. You walk up outside stairs to enter on the balcony. As I said there is no overhang. My builder thinks rain and water dripping from the second level balcony will cause water problems in my entry door. I don't like particularly like the look of awnings, framing seems rather expensive. Is there another way to keep water at bay or must I choose between awnings and a framed in overhang? If awnings would you go metal or canvas? I know metal is sturdier but canvas wins lookswise. Thanks

I think I would add a full glass storm door instead of the overhang if water damage is the reason. Any overhang will not do much to protect wind driven rain---which can still be blown onto the door off the overhang. A really nice full glass storm will enhance the look of the entrance---and be less expensive than any overhang.
