1927 house Living Room Walls & Fireplace

| We have just purchased our first house...both exciting and very daunting since it will need a lot of TLC. I pulled down the wallpaper in the living room easily enough and discovered a very thin, fiber board like stuff underneath...there are two links to pics below...can someone tell me what it is and why they might have put it up so I know better what I am getting into and what to expect? Is it most likely covering plaster? Should I take it down...or do a spackle texture over it and forget the whole thing? I don't really want to do that...another thing, over by the fireplace, which has a chimney...the wall is cement above it...any recommendations what to do? I was also kinda wondering if anyone might know if our fireplace was or could be a working regular fireplace...it has a gas line to hook up those fake logs, the space is small, but it also has a chimney stuffed with insulation. I am 23 and very new to this so I appreciate any advice...thanks!

| Cant speak for the fiber board. It looks like what was referred to as "cane board" but hard to say. You might consider running furring strips over it layed out similar to a framed wall and sheetrock over the furring strips. The fireplace should be inspected by a licensed chimney sweep or a licensed home inspector before you make any decisions on that project. |
