Need advice: old fireplace wants a facelift

My fireplace is faced with sandstone, floor to ceiling, that matches the sandstone on the front of the house, a mid-Fifties ranch. Before I paint I want to remove the stone and put up drywall.
The back of it sticks out into the garage and it's made of cinderblock. Is it foolhardy to do this?

What do you expect to find behind the sandstone? A fireplace is built into an opening in the wall framing that's just like a doorway. The cinder block fireplace is constructed through that opening. Look at the inside of the firebox where it transitions from sandstone to the fireproof bricks that make up the inside of the firebox. There's probably a metal lintel at the top. Visualize where the wall section meets the masonry. It's not easy to remove just the sandstone and leave a clean transition at the same vertical plane as the wall.

You can't drywall right up to the firebox. The code is certain distance of noncombustible material must cover the walls and floor, when measured from the edge of the firebox.
