30 stove too small for house hunting family cooks?

Hi. Thought I was in home stretch.... Re-doing galley kitchen. Plan was for 36" range. GC made mistake - he admits it - and built cabinets for 30" range. I said OK, 30" easier to find/afford. Got great KA range and slide out hood (thank you to this forum). Now, I think it looks cramped. Flanked by upper and lower 15 " cabinets. GC will make adjustments now, which will cost less than in future. I can : 1) leave it 2)leave stove and get 36" hood (making the eupper cabinets 3 inches narrower than lower cabinets), or 3)bite bullet and re-do all. Someone suggested that because this is a family size house in a decent neighborhood, having a 30" stove may hurt re-sale, mother will say, "I need more space". Houses here are mainly nice/modest ranch houses with some upgrades. Even though I am not anywhere near wealthy, I don't want to be penny-wise, pound foolish. Thanks.

I would leave it. I do a lot of cooking and my 30" five burner stove has been great. A lot of people get too hung up on "resale" even when they plan on staying put for the next 5 to 10 years or more.

I have two 30 inch ranges side by side and only one gets used except at Thanksgiving and my wife is a serious French cook and my son is a professional chef. I provide quality control and testing.

Why compromise? Minor adjustments are understandable BUT you planned for a 36" cooktop and the GC made a serious mistake. Sounds like cooking is a major hobby for your family. The GC should eat it and correct the error so that you can have the cooktop that you had planned for. Remodels are too big / too time consuming / too expensive to let the GC dictate how you are going to spend the rest of your time in your home.

Most new builds/renos I've seen (unless they have a high end custom kitchen) have 30" ranges. We are currently remodelling our newly purchased 1960's ranch-style and are putting in a pennisula gas cooktop- 30" with a 36" island mount range hood. I am an avid amateur chef, mother of 3, and find the 5 burner 30" is just great-it's the oven space that is the make or break for me!

Actually, in my opinion, I think a 36" stove space would hurt re-sale more than a 30" space, just because far fewer people really want a 36"er. Maybe it's the norm in Beverly Hills, but not in the houses I see. The 36" fan might not be a bad idea - just to open things up a bit up above. As far as the lower cabinets go, I think it makes things easier if there is at least a small counter on either side of stove to place things on. If you put a 36" hood up above, you might end up with the same open feel as if you had the whole thing re-done. Maybe draw the scenarios out on several pages to see if you can a feel for the difference. And remember, it takes a big Tom to fill up a 36" oven!

30" feels cramped to you. Are you used to a 36" stove and don't want to lose the cooktop space? ? Do you have a 30" now and feel you need more space? Are you used to a 30" free standing stove with no uppers on either side? If the answers to either of the first two questions are yes then do think about changing to the 36". If the answer to the third is yes, that may be the problem and the issue is getting used to uppers. In my part of the world (CT) 36" is for very large kitchens or for personal preferences and 30" is standard and expected in family sized homes in nice neighborhoods.

go with what is normal for your area for your style home/kitchen. aroudn here it is extremely rare to see a 36" range in other than a high end home.
