What to do with this fireplace

I have a fireplace in a condo I just bought that I'm looking to change. Right now, it has a really big opening, a large black basic surround around it and a hearth that has tacky tile and is really big. The bricks inside aren't that attractive, but dealing with them isn't really an option.

Does anyone know how hard it is to change a surround. Ideally, I'd like the fireplace to be glass enclosed in something modern. That seems like it would be more efficient and I won't be burning much more than the occasional manufactured fire log in there (forget what they are called).

I'm also thinking of taking a sledge to the hearth and replacing it with something more simple or if possible going without one completely.

An example of something I like is here

Does anyone have any input? I appreciate your help.
