low-toxin flooring ideas for finished basement

Hi All,

We are moving into a house in a few weeks that just went through a big renovation. The finished basement space previously had somewhat beat up red and white checkered vinyl flooring. The edges of the vinyl tile needed to be taken up when the old wall paneling was demo-ed before new plaster walls were added. The existing vinyl floor now needs to be completely covered with something new before we use this room as a kids' play space. We don't have the budget for tile, and we don't want to do wall-to-wall carpeting due to moisture concerns. We thought about pulling up the vinyl and using throw rugs over the concrete floor, but it was going to be too much work to level the floor and pull up all of the glue residue.

To make matters more complicated, my husband is very chemically sensitive. We can't use any treated carpets, carpet glues, etc. Any ideas for a low-toxin floor option that would somehow cover the space just about wall-to-wall? (Unfortunately, the edges of the room are where the vinyl was pulled up to reveal concrete.)

Thanks in advance!

Sara
