Long ceiling repair

Given:
24" oc trussed rafters
existing drywall 1/2"
The room below is the a great room. (All open)
8' ceilings

I had some water damage that left me with a about a 22 1/4' x 15' section of drywall that is missing. In other words I have a section of drywall that needs repair that runs inside the rafter run 15'.

What I am thinking... Cutting the drywall so that I am left with .75 inch of exposed rafters to screw drywall into each rafter. Then I would have a 2' x 15' section to repair.

Also being that there is 24" oc rafters and 1/2 drywall I was planing on putting some blocking between rafters to support the drywall as the new drywall sheet would be running parallel not perpendicular.

Also any ideas to avoid butt joint issues?

Looking for action plan to do this correctly. Please help!!

Drywall does not have the flexing issues that plywood has
so no matter how you cut the sheet, you'll have a butt joint and have to address it in the finishing.

Hi, Nail or screw 1x2 on the rafters to create a nail edge. A lot easier than cutting the exsting sheet rock back 3/4". I don't join taper to butt joints only butt to butt or taper to taper.
On the wall cut the new sheetrock 2" bigger than the hole. score the back of the patch piece one inch on each side, break and peel off the rock from the front of the paper. the back of the patch should be the same or a little smaller than the hole. The front should be 2" bigger, Mark the patch and the wall then fit the patch, When the patch fits the hole mud the edges of the hole and install patch. Let the patch dry, then finish. A little at a time never put on more mud than you want to sand off.
