Help with choosing Hardwood Floor

I currently have oak trim throughout my home, which has a honey color. I am interested in a darker floor that complements the current oak trim. I have fallen in love with the look of an engineered tigerwood, but I would really prefer an unfinished domestic that can be stained. Any suggestions for a species or staining method that might offer more color variation? Would something "character grade" be appropriate?

What is called #2 maple might work.

This example is what I installed without staining and just moil based floor poly finish.

Maple is stainable(with some difficulty, but the darker the stain/dye the better) and easily obtained.
