new windows came in wrong

Please give my husband and me advice. We are remodeling and are putting a wall of Anderson stationary windows and a sliding door in the den and a large Jeldwen casement bow window in the adjoining breakfast room. Everything was installed and when we looked at the results we were shocked to see that the windows do not even remotely match the outside of our brick home. The end result is horrible instead of beautiful. We left a message for the contractors (brothers). My husband emailed them Sunday night, so far not a word. We are easy to work with, maybe too easy, and this is a real mess. How can this be handled so we'll get the windows replaced without costing a fortune? We can't afford to fire them. We like their work and finding another contractor would be a nightmare. We must keep a good relationship so the work will be completed properly and in a timely manner. We do not want to start suing and threatening. We've waited forever to remodel. We are just sick about this. HELP!

When you say that they don't match the outside of your brick home, do you mean stylistically, or do you mean they're the wrong size? Is there some molding that still needs to be installed?

And golly, take a deep breath before you start thinking suits and threats. Give your builders a chance to respond. It's only Monday morning.

RE: new windows came in wrong

You are very vague about it.

What do you mean..they don't match? Match what?

Were you involved in the ordering process? Did you choose them?

RE: new windows came in wrong

The windows came in the wrong exterior color. No, we never chose the exterior color, only the style windows and door. My husband spoke to our contractor today. The contractor is livid b/c the "window" man told him that we'd chosen the exterior color and there's nothing that the window guy will do to rectify the problem. He is a real pain in the neck.

We never chose the color for the exterior. The guy is lying. We hate the color and would never choose it in a million years! The windows inside are wood which is fine b/c we intend to paint them anyway.

Our contractor said that he's looked into painting the exterior at no cost to us and that he'd stand behind his work. HERE'S THE CATCH...the windows and sliding door are all aluminum clad on the outside and we're very concerned that painting won't work.

The contractor said they'd be sanded and done properly. He's supposedly checked it out.

We are up a creek, I'm afraid. Any suggestions would be appreciated. PLEASE tell me that aluminum clad can be sanded and treated to make quality paint adhere to it!

Can windows be painted? HELP!

REGARDING AN EARLIER POST I MADE: Can windows that are aluminum clad on the outside be painted the correct color? Ours came in wrong and the window guy won't cooperate and make everything right. We never had the opportunity to pick out the color. The window guy lied to our contractor and said that we chose the color that came in. We HATE the color. Ugly is too nice a word to describe how it looks against our brick! Our contractor had words with the window guy who is a complete snake. Our contractor has looked into painting the aluminum clad proper color and said it can be done. He will do it at no cost to us and stand behind his work 100%. What do you all think? Can paint adhere if done properly, sanded. primed; etc.? We are desperate.

I need to clarify that we have no idea if the sliding door and windows are vinyl or aluminum clad! That tells you how much input we had!

RE: new windows came in wrong

"The windows came in the wrong exterior color. No, we never chose the exterior color, only the style windows and door."
If you never told them what color you wanted, how can the color you got be "wrong"? IF you wanted something specific, you should have selected it....

That's really nice he will paint them for you on his dime, since it is not his fault that you did not select a color.
Hope it works out to your satisfaction!

RE: new windows came in wrong

What colour are the windows, and what colour did you want? Do you have a copy of the original order? Did it specify a cladding colour? Were you asked about colour? Did you sign the order or did your contractor? If you don't have a copy of the contract or order, you should ask for a copy.

I know things sometimes go wrong or get overlooked in the course of a big project -- but this seems like something that all parties would want carefully specified and be pretty careful about.

It sounds like your contractor wants to make you happy, but painting windows is time consuming and expensive. Was the mistake perhaps his? You can't very well call the window guy a snake if he built what was ordered.

Something isn't quite adding up here.

Regarding paint -- No matter how good the paint job, paint will eventually fail and need to be redone. It may be a few years, it may be 20 years, but no paint lasts forever.

The aluminum cladding can be painted.

But my concern is who in the heck missed the exterior color?

RE: new windows came in wrong

After personally speaking to the window salesman today, who yelled at me and said I picked out the color, which I did not, I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT THE MAN HAS SOME SERIOUS ANGER ISSUES.I hung up and put a call in to the guy's boss. I was shocked when his boss called me back asap. I explained that his salesman ordered windows w/o clearing a thing with us. I also let him know his salesman was out of control and we won't buy the rest of our windows from his company if they don't make things right. My husband compared it to a car salesman picking out the color and options for a new car w/o first checking with the prospective buyers.

The boss was very nice and is sending me a color chart to pick out what color we would like. I think the boss is going to suggest painting the exterior. He said that can be done, but we wonder what it will look like. He said the exterior is vinyl and, therefore, must be certain the paint is specifically for vinyl. Any thoughts on this? What a disappointing mess. We've been had.

The sales guy should be fired and forced to take anger management classes, as well as, heavily medicated. I feel sorry for the guy's family. He would be a nightmare to live with. I'd hate to be in a fox hole with the gutless dude. LOL!

Vinyl can be painted, and done successfully.

However, there is a rule about vinyl. It cannot be painted any darker then the original color.

What color are your exteriors?

Michael

RE: new windows came in wrong

Western, we never chose a color for the salesman to order. He took it upon himself to order what HE assumed we wanted. No way would anyone with good taste pick out the color the salesman chose. The color does not remotely blend or compliment our brick and trim. One would have to be color blind not to see the problem.

 o
RE: new windows came in wrong

What colors are available?

Which one would you choose?

I hope your situation gets remedied to your satisfaction but I do have one question--weren't you or your husband home when they started installing the windows? If you were home I would think this would have been noticed right away and the installation stopped. I am still dealing with the window installers from he** after two years so I do feel your pain!

 o
RE: new windows came in wrong

Arbisi, We are not living in the house. Had we been there, we would have stopped the installation immediately. What should have been done according to our decorator, is check with us even before ordering the windows OR at least making sure we okayed the windows before taking all of them out of boxes and installing. Everything was done incorrectly from the get-go! Things are slowly being resolved, thank goodness, but I can guarantee that our contractor will never let this mistake happen again. Fortunately, he's a good man and is making everything right. The window salesman is the problem. The guy has some serious issues.

I hope your problem is resolved soon. Exactly what happened? My advice would be to go straight to the top if you aren't getting treated properly.

RE: new windows came in wrong

I am glad they are taking care of you. My problems aren't nearly as serious as yours--just aggravating. Ordered windows and patio door spring of 2004. They called a month later to say we needed different windows because of egress laws for the bedrooms--okay. Came to install in june 2004, windows didn't have the grills between the glass as ordered so they wanted to just glue some on to the outside--I said no so they sent them back to the factory to be taken apart and grills put in. Came back in August to install. One window has what appears to be glue residue on the inside of the glass said they would have manufacturer service person come out--never heard from service person. Patio door missing parts so patio door doesn't lock. Called several times from sept to nov 2004 (permits expired in Nov)then gave up. Finally heard from them a year later and I told them they still needed to fix/replace the gluey window and get the latch for patio door and renew the permits for inspection. They said okay but never did anything except bill my credit card for the final $800 we owed. I immediately contacted them and credit card company and charge removed. Didn't hear any more from them until this Aug (2006)when they called to find out what was still needed on the job--told the caller again what needed to be done--haven't heard any more.
To top it all off---I had to redo their ugly caulk job around the door. Had to hire a stucko gut to repair the gaps they left on the outside of windows. Never received proof of hurricane shutters I received to get a home owners discount. And----they used expansive foam insulation when it plainly stated on every window not to use expansive foam.
This company has been dropped by the BBB and have several lawsuits pending from other people they have done work for so I have just given up on them.

RE: new windows came in wrong

Arbisi,

You really have had serious problems! I'd be livid to put it mildly. Some companies just hope we'll get fed-up and go away. There must still be something else you can do, but what?

Maybe you could begin by posting the name of the company on this website to see if anyone out there has had similar problems and what, if anything, was done. I just hate to see these sorry companies steal our money and then get off the hook. It just is not right and smacks of dishonesty and deceit and down right fraud.

Please let me know if you ever have any luck getting things made right! Good luck! (what state are you from?)

RE: new windows came in wrong

We are in Florida the company is Stormshield Protection Corp.

RE: new windows came in wrong

Arbisi, I hope a lot of people read this post and to steer clear of this company. Do let me know if STORMSHIELD PROTECTION CORP. ever corrects ALL of their mistakes! They are probably out of business or operate under another name. Best of luck!

 o
RE: new windows came in wrong

They are still very much in business and still take out HUGE ads in all the newspapers. Their reputation soured after they opened a second division on the gulf coast and then we had two bad hurricane seasons so, rather then taking care of all their current customers they just keep taking on new ones.

 o
RE: new windows came in wrong

Arbisi, that's amazing, isn't it? This website has so many followers, sooner or later the word will get out. Eventually the company will "mess up" royally and they'll get their lunch. My mother had a cute saying that "even a bird has to come down for a drink!"

RE: new windows came in wrong

I found this message thread while doing research on the many complaints against Stormshield Protection Corporation. Just like many of you, I have had serious problems with them. If you're looking for more information about this company, check out my website where I am compiling all of the information I can find about the bad things they have done to consumers in South Florida. The site is www.stormshieldsucks.com

Good luck to all who've had the misfortune to have dealt with them!
