French doors

Our sliding glass door finally broke and no parts for replacement after four years of living here and wanting French doors. This door looks out over our backyard, home to wildlife and woods, so we do not want something to get in the way of the view, but are concerned with the security of another all glass door. The area of the slider is about eight feet wide. Any suggestions as to door openings or manufacturers?

RE: French doors

Most good quality French doors have top and bottom locking hardware operated by the handles and lock better than most other door. The glass in the door is as secure as your windows. If you are concerned about security you should be talking to an alarm installer.

If you don't need both doors to open, consider the style where one door is fixed. DS had one in his previous home because that side of the house faced the SW. It offered more protection from the wind and rain in addition to closing more securely.

Modern French door designs allow both doors to lock securely without one being fixed with flush bolts. That was the point of my earlier comment; all glazed doors and windows are insecure but not primarily because of the locking systems.
