1952 Cottage remodel, ceiling ?

Last weekend while working on the cottage a possible future tenant approached me with a deal. For a reduced monthly rate he would help me finish the work. Still hashing out the particulars.

Now for the question. The DW wants to install bead board planks on the ceiling which I conveyed to him. He stated that he had some old heart pine BB in salvage he could use but would need to saw off the tongue damaged during the removal process and face butt the planks. I plan to blow in insulation and concerned with gaps allowing dust to enter the leaving area. Is this a legitimate concern? And if so, is there a product that could be placed over the joints on the attic side that would prevent this from happening?

Ick, blown in. Worst stuff EVER imo, if you ever have to deal with it later. Plus, it hold smells like you can't even believe. Our old house was full of it, and we have now removed ever last ever loving stink filled particle. It was an estate and I don't think the windows were open much maybe, but the house had a certain smell from the day we bought it. Had thought a good cleaning would fix it, but no. Not until it was gone (and man oh man when you opened a cavity...whew) was that smell gone.

Anyway. I would think that if you're not putting it on an existing ceiling (we put T&G pine planks on ours to cover popcorn) it's a valid concern. I'd also be worried about expansion and contraction with humidity allowing it to "seep" out. You might be able to put up a barrier before you put up the ceiling-maybe tyvek? You might see it though...I would think you'd want something breathable, otherwise you could use plastic sheeting.

I second the ICK to blown in! We are currently renovating and removing it. Hubby and I are swearing at his parents who had it put in as we remove it. If you have another option for insulation I would revisit it.

As far as the beadboard, I am not sure about dust, but I have plenty of beadboard in my home and my concern would be expansion and contraction also. I would be worried it would just LOOK bad without the tongues when it naturally moved. I assume older wood is a bit more stable than the newer beadboard we have put up, however the kitchen can get very humid at times and depending on your location I am not sure what the wood will do. The beadboard in my bath expands and contracts enough that I realized I had to re-paint 2 other times through the year to get all the gaps filled propperly. You could see very clear stripes where there was no paint, once I filled it in on the tongues it was fine, but if you have no tonges showing in the gap what will you see when your wood moves?
