One step transition

I have remodeled my kitchen and now have a 10 inch step down into my addition. I want to put in one step where the riser height will be such that the addition floor to the tread on the step will be 5 inches. I'm looking for advice as to how long the run should be for the tread. I was thinking 12 to 14 inches.

I would say 14"-15" would be better, and falls within the general rule of 2 risers + 1 step = 25"

You are talking about 2 steps at 5" each. 5" is the minimum safe stair riser height and slightly below the critical stair angle where a ramp is preferred. The most appropriate formula would one for an outdoor stair:
2R+T=26 which would give you a 16" tread that would not need a nosing. This is what is shown in the AIA's Architectural Graphic Standards.
