140 sq ft x $300 (cheap addition to tie into what's there, plus all of the plumbing and electrical that a kitchen needs) = 40-50K. Plus all of the finishes for the kitchen, which averages another 50K. So, 100K for something "complete" and inexpensive in a low cost area. In an expensive area, a 140 sq ft kitchen addition could be triple that, easily.

Ouch! Might have to get DH to do the whole thing. He can do plumbing and electrical - he is an engineer who worked for an electrician in his younger years. He can probably do it all except for the fact that he is now much older and I don't want him to attempt any heavy work.

We are committed to spending the $$ for a new kitchen, so those costs are a given, Just trying to figure out if bumping out the front wall is feasible. We have not been able to come up with a satisfactory design given the existing footprint.

Now thinking about a cantilever addition - maybe just 2-3 feet out. No foundation, covered with siding. We may even have enough roof shingles left over to cover the new section. Anyone care to take a guess at how much the new structure would cost, excluding costs to extend plumbing, electrical and all interior finishing? We would probably try to keep and reuse the existing wondow as well. The first floor sits about 3 feet above the ground.

Your best bet is to call a few contractors and have them over to look. Give them all the same thing to work with and just get a ball park estimate.

Here on GW you are going to get a wide range of numbers and a lot of averages which may not apply where you live. Some of the numbers given out here I finding shocking. Thats because of 2 bed bungalow will be $1,000,000 in california and less than $100,000 where I live.

It probably wouldn't be as much as GD says, esp in a low col area. I am in a high col area and put on a 2 story addition 20x15 onto a cape, for that.

Where you will run into $$$ is the finishes and the kitchen remodel that is planned with it.

I agree that your best bet is to talk with 2-3 contractors for a local ballpark figure. Then, you can know what to plan around.
