Need creative ideas to guard stairs

Last weekend we re-built our basement stairs. The before:

Problems: aside from rotting supports posts and uneven treads, a protruding wall made it so that even things that made it through the 36" door couldn't make it down the We moved that impeding wall over a foot and widened the steps.

The only issue left is that the stairs are still low-overhead at the bottom. This is because there's a bedroom wall on the other side. We couldn't move the entire wall over, just the portion that butted into the bedroom wall.

So now we have wonderful wide stairs, and we have space to bring down reasonably-sized stuff. But the headroom is a hazard. Most trips up and down the stairs we can walk to the left, which has a tad more headroom. But if you're not paying attention you walk smack down the center and can bump your head or shoulder on that jogged-out corner.

So we want to put some sort of protection in to reduce the likelihood of bumps. Any creative ideas? Mr. Weedy wants to cut the floor joists beneath that bedroom corner down so the bump-out is a little higher, but I want to leave it alone. Perhaps some sort of movable handrail that most of the time is 12" to the left of the RH side of the stairs but can push over to the far right when wide things need to be taken down? I'm up for some creative carpentry if anyone has some brainstorms.
