Fireplace remodel: stucco or wonderboard?

My fireplace looks like this:
And I want it to look like this:
I've read that there is a type of stucco to make a real smooth finish. Should I just stucco over the brick?
Or do I need to put wonderboard over it? (That seems like more work than stucco.)
