insulation

Hi
I have a great room that has open-beam ceiling with wood planks in between the beams. The ceiling goes straight to the roof on the other side with no attic space between.
This area gets real hot in summer. I want to create a false-ceiling and insulate the area between the beams and then add a drywall ceiling between beams. Questions:
1. Should I use faced or unfaced insulation?
2. Should there be a vapor barrier or not? If so, where should I install it and using what material.
Thanks.
PS I live in inland San Diego.
