Too many unknown variables for anyone to really say. How complex is the existing structure? Do they use CAD or are they hand drawing. Is it a sole practitioner or do they have a staff? How many different concepts are they providing? How many projects are they currently working on?

Architects, just like homes come in many different shapes sizes with their own styles.

I've worked with an architect twice on major remodels (1100 sqft, and 800 sqft) and each time the whole process took at least two months until we had gotten to the final drawings. It was reasonable given what we wanted designed. But we had a number of interim conferences during that time.

Call your architect and ask him to give you a timeframe and also set a date soon for a meeting. At the end of that meeting set another date and so on. If you have a good architect, he's probably working on multiple projects, but that doesn't mean the two of you can't agree on an approximate schedule.
