Roofing question

We have a small breezeway with a gable roof that we need to add a ceiling to. What type of structure do we need to build to tie into the gable roof? There are no trusses...but I don't want to pull on the current roof structure. Just need a basic guide.

Add cross rafters(horizontal from side to side). Install the ceiling to those cross rafters.
