Pony Wall Height?

How tall (or short) should a pony wall be? We are removing a closet and turning the back wall into a pony wall but are not sure how tall it should be? There is a window about 10 inches from where the full wall will become a pony wall....should the pony wall match the height of the bottom of the window and be equal in height to the window ledge?

What is the context here? Is this a second story, under the eaves kind of pony wall?

No the house is a one story ranch style home. We are removing a coat closet that makes the entry just way too closed in for us...we don't need the closet. None of the walls we are removing are weight bearing walls so there isn't any problem with taking the walls out completely however we want to leave a short pony wall about 4 ft in length just to give some definition/separation between the dining area and entry.

Bar height counters are 42", and the counters are usually 1 1/2" making the walls that support those counters be 40 1/2" for everything to come out right. Counter height is 36" (pony wall is 34 1/2") so I'd have to say that choosing one of the standard sized heights would probably give you the best look. Which height you choose will depend on what purpose you see the remaining wall having as well as what type of counter you wish it to have.

The biggest mistake people make with creating pony walls (other than forgetting that there is electrical and HVAC inside those walls that has to be dealt with) instead of just taking the whole wall down is that you've now created a "plonk" space that gets covered with stuff by people coming into the home. If this wall will be close to an entrance, be sure that you really analyze how this will affect the traffic flow and landing spaces for mail, backpacks, shoes, etc. You may wish you still had the wall if it becomes a crowded mess of stuff.

Thanks for the info! With it just being my hubby and myself these days we are excited about this project! We will be making just a small top to the pony wall so it won't hold much if we or others want to set stuff down! We will be placing a short church style pew in front of it so if stuff gets "plonked" that is probably where it will get dropped! LOL... We have plans to extend the entry about 6 ft (what is currently an entry patio) in the future sometime and will have a closet there when that project is completed....at that time we will probably bring in a contractor to help as that will be a much bigger project! Thanks again for all the help!
