Technik Closets from Costco

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever heard about Technik Closets (Cabinetry System) from Costco? Any personal experience?

I really like the design, but I'm afraid to invest money in a product which doesn't have any reviews.

Description:

All Technik cabinets are constructed from 3/4" thick furniture grade particleboard, which is covered with a durable low pressure (melamine) laminate. Adjustable shelves and installation rails are also 3/4" thick. Cabinets feature a captured 1/4" thick back panel, for additional strength. Once assembled, with hardwood dowel and glue joints, each cabinet passes through a computer controlled case clamp, which guarantees a square precise cabinet every time

Melamine on particle board is a low end cabinet construction method and in addition to the possibility of failing prematurely, it would off-gas formaldehyde unless the specification says it is free of that dangerous chemical. I would be cautious about using such materials in poorly ventilated small spaces.

I made the mistake of purchasing a closet system from Technik Closets via Costco. They advertise all wood and all quality, but it is all particle board! For particle board, you are better off purchasing a better quality product at IKEA - and, IKEA will save you 75% from what Technik will charge you. Plus, Technik advertises that their product is delivered fully assembled, but remember that you still have to install the whole system by yourself. The installation time on a Technik product is just as long as IKEA's product. Technik is definitely NOT worth the money - even with their 40% sale!!! Go to IKEA.

I like IKEA stuff! Most people call it junk but it works for me and looks great!

If you like the design, accessories (and price), go for it. Looks comparable to the other closet companies and would likely perform the same.

I checked them out. They definitely advertise their product as particleboard not all wood. They also state their stuff meets CARB2 for off gases. At least their stuff comes assembled and you put it up. IKEA sends a ton of boxes and you put it all together yourself.

We just installed the closet in one of the bedrooms. If you know a handyman who can do the job for you- go and hire him. We did it ourselves and it was quite labor intensive. One thing we were unhappy about is the drawers didn't have predrilled holes in them. The closet came well packed and marked, that was a bonus. There were no chips and scratches on any pieces. The company included a small repair kit. Overall I'm happy with our purchase.

Absolutely horrible customer service and the delivery process is even worse. Every single piece of our 2 master closets came damaged. Definitely would not use again and would not recommend.
