Remodel of Split Entry

My husband and I bought a house in a great neighborhood for a great price. We'd like to continue living here long term but need a little help in ideas for remodeling it to fit our needs. Besides paint, we're looking to add a porch to the front and would love input or advice for what we could/couldn't do. We'd also like to find out what we can do about the ugly bulkhead we have in the front.

Besides that the layout is great, we're finishing the lower level for more space and the land is great.

Call an architect or an engineer they should be able to tell you what is or is not possible.

here are a couple of ideas to get you thinking.
you'll have to know setbacks, grade/drainage and sun exposure at the very least to consider this, but it's a start anyway.

how about a small perpendicular mud room size in front of the bulkhead--it'll add a lot to the plain front of the home and perhaps badly needed natural light to the downstairs.

otoh if you can afford it remove the center stairway entirely and relocate it and the bulkhead to wherever makes the most sense for your family.
we did that fifteen years ago (not a split level) and gained a humungous room which has become our master suite.
