Any cost estimators for various remodeling jobs?

I'm (very slowly) starting to move on an addition/remodel project and one of the first things I'm asked when interviewing professionals such as architects is the size of my budget. Having never done anything of this nature before, I have no idea what it costs and thus have no budget.

Does anyone know of some rough cost estimators for different remodeling jobs so that I can have a vague idea for these folks?

Remodeling Magazine has an interactive comparison chart that will give you ideas of the average price of various projects in different areas of the country.

For instance, a mid scale master suite addition in the San Francisco metro area averaged 139K in 2011-12. An upscale one averaged 278K.

Thanks Holly--that's useful. And interesting. And a little depressing if you compare SF and Sacramento, for example. The costs are surprisingly similar for both places but the resale values for Sacto are around 54% compared to SF's ~81%.
