Help! Looking for alternative to sheetrocking a ceiling

We have a contemporary, loft-like house with an open floor plan. We have a problem with the ceiling that is too complicated to describe and it seems that sheetrocking it is the solution. But, we want to avoid doing this because of the mess. So, we are looking for other alternatives to cover the existing the ceiling that would not create such a colossal mess.

If the problem requires removing whatever is there, sheet rock may be your only option due to local building codes.

Sheet rock is a firebreak. It is less expensive than plaster.

The building codes for most locations in the US require the fire break.

If there is a problem with cosmetic issues with the existing material mon the ceiling, covering it with something is just hiding the problem, which usually gets worse.

I am not sure what your problem is but how about the metal tile sheets....they have silver, gold and copper. Not sure how big the sheets are.....The big box stores has them.

It is a mistake to design the ceiling around the fear of a mess; that is the contractor's problem to solve as Worthy points out. If you are in a blueboard market there would be no need to sand and no more mess than painting.
