Ideas on how to fix kitchen ceiling from remodel?

Hello,

I usually hang out in the kitchen forum, but thought this question would be more appropriate here. We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen. We took out soffits and are not planning on running the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, so we have patching to do on the ceiling where the soffits were. We have it patched, but now face the dilemma of how to match the existing ceiling texture (mild knock-down). Is it best to try to redo the whole ceiling, or can the texture be matched easily--we've never done anything like that. If we should redo the whole thing, what is the easiest way to do this? We don't like a lot of texture. Thanks, wijum

Now the soffits are patched, I'd install new sheetrock over the entire ceiling. I think it would take less time and be easier than trying to match the texture, and you'd be much more likely to get a nice, smooth ceiling that would last.

I had a similar issue and I chose to put up a tin ceiling. Our kitchen is not large 10' X 10', but my son and I finished it one evening after we got off work and it came out looking good. I got my tin from americantinceilings.com and used their bright white Snaplock panels. If I could figure out how to post pictures I would as it did come out well and it was pretty simple. It is not really cheap to do, it costs about $3-$4 sq.ft. but it really looks nice.

mag77 and tonbiak,

Thanks so much for the advice. I guess it does make more sense to cover the whole ceiling with something and go from there. Now what to use? =)

Thanks, wijum

I had to repair my kitchen ceiling & decide to go the ceiling tile way too. I used foam tiles & it was so easy. Mine came from www.ceilingtilesbyus.com & I used the R10w pattern. It is called Grono & I just left mine white. Someone had painted that pattern in a copper look & it was gorgeous. I might try that down the road. What I liked about these tiles is that they were easy to install & looked nice. All you do is measure, slap some mastic on the back of the tile, press in place & finally caulk the whole thing around the edges. We did the whole kitchen in less than 3 hours & it's a big kitchen. I used 72 tiles & we really glopped on the mastic so I think it took 3 buckets of that & 1 tube of caulk.

If you find the right professional they can do an unbelievable job of matching the texture for a fraction the cost of any other remedy. We've repaired a lot of sheetrock during a remodel (pulled 6 beams out of a family room that were cut into the ceiling and other miscellany) and you simply can't tell where the repairs were made. It's an art, but there are people out there.
