Tiling on top of old sub walls?

In order to save me $1K, my contractor is recommending not removing the sub walls if during demolition he finds they're in good shape. Given that the house was built in the late 20s/early 30s, he suspects that they were very well built and, therefore, could possibly be tiled over. I love his tile work, but am not sure if this is a viable option. Should I be concerned?

Sub walls are the surface that the tile sits on. In this case, the sub walls consist of full mud over 12" metal sheets. The contractor plans to remove the existing tile from the sub walls and, assuming the sub walls are in good shape, put the new tile on them.
